Check your prepaid balance
There are a few easy ways to check the balance on your prepaid plan. You can call a specific shortcode, send a text, or simply jump onto your provider’s app or website to see your remaining credit, data, and banked data. On this page, we’ll take you through the different options and share some handy tips to help you stay on top of your usage.
Which number do you use to check your prepaid balance?
Every provider has its own way of doing things. While most Aussies use apps these days, you can still use SMS or quick-dial codes (known as USSD) to get an update.
How the main providers handle balance checks
- Telstra: The My Telstra app is the go-to. While you can still try texting ‘bal’ to 125 100, Telstra now directs most users to their online My Prepaid portal for real-time accuracy.
- Optus: Text the word “MENU” to 9999 or call 555. Most Optus prepaid customers now use the My Optus app to track their ‘data pool’ usage.
- Vodafone: Call 1512 from your Vodafone phone or text “BAL” to 1511.
- Boost Mobile: Text “balance” to 125 100.
- amaysim: Simply text the word “BAL” to 568 from your amaysim number and you’ll receive a message straight back with your balance.
These are just a few examples. To find out exactly how your specific provider works, it’s best to check the support section on their website. If you’re stuck, you can always give their customer service team a buzz for help.
Check your balance via the provider’s app or website
The easiest way to keep an eye on your prepaid SIM is usually through the provider’s app or by logging into your account on their website. Once you’re logged in, you’ll get a full breakdown of your credit, data bank, and when your next recharge is due. Most Aussie telcos now have “data widgets” for your home screen that make checking your balance even faster.
If you’re using an eSIM (which is now the standard for most new Aussie prepaid plans), you can often see a data breakdown directly in your phone’s cellular settings, though the provider’s app will always be the most accurate.
Can I check my prepaid balance from another phone?
Yes, if you check your balance via the provider’s website, you don’t have to do it from your own phone – you can use any device with an internet connection. Usually, you’ll just need to log in to your “My Account” or “Member Area” using your mobile number and password.
If you haven’t set up an online account yet, you might need your SIM card handy to receive a one-time security code (OTP) if you’re trying to log in from a different device for the first time.
Why can’t I see a balance on my prepaid SIM?
Sometimes your balance might not show up immediately after you recharge. It can take a little while for the system to process the payment and update your account. The time it takes can vary depending on your payment method. Instant recharges via card or Apple/Google Pay are usually immediate, but if you’ve used BPAY, keep in mind it can take 1–3 business days to process.
If your balance isn’t showing up even though you’ve recharged, double-check that the money has actually left your bank account. If the funds have left your account, give it a moment to sync with your service. You shouldn’t have to wait more than 24 hours; if it’s still not there by the next day, get in touch with your provider directly to get it sorted.
