Transfer mobile number

Moving your mobile number from one telco to another is known as porting, and the process is quick and easy. You only need your basic account details, and you’ll simply verify the transfer via a one-time SMS code once your new provider kicks off the process. Whether you’re signing up for a postpaid SIM only or prepaid plan, your new provider will manage the transfer and ensure your old service is automatically cancelled once the port is complete.

How does porting work?

To protect consumers from scams, most Australian providers use a secure “pre-porting verification” process. The system relies on your account information and a unique SMS code sent to your handset.

Various ways to start the transfer

  • During sign-up: Simply select the option to “Keep my existing number” when ordering your new plan online.
  • Via the app: Most Australian telcos allow you to trigger the move directly through their mobile app once you have your new SIM.
  • In-store: If you’re visiting a retail outlet, the staff can initiate the porting process on the spot.

What you’ll need

  • For postpaid plans: Your current Account Number. You can find this on your latest bill or in your provider’s app.
  • For prepaid plans: Usually just your date of birth, though some providers may still require a dedicated account number found in your app profile

How to transfer your number

  1. Check your current plan: Most Aussie plans are now “no lock-in,” but if you are still paying off a handset (Device Repayment Plan), you will likely receive a final bill for the remaining balance of the phone.
  2. Order your new SIM: Choose your plan and provide your existing number and account details.
  3. Verify via SMS: Once the porting process starts, you will receive an SMS on your current SIM card. You must follow the prompts, usually by entering a six-digit code into your new provider’s app or website to authorise the transfer.
  4. Wait for the switch: Porting usually takes between 30 minutes and a few hours during business hours.
  5. Switch SIMs: Once your old SIM loses service, pop in your new physical SIM. If you’ve opted for an eSIM, follow the digital activation prompts in your telco’s app – this is usually the fastest way to get connected.

Can I transfer my number with a prepaid SIM?

Yes, absolutely. It works almost exactly the same way as a monthly contract. Just make sure your current prepaid service is still active when you start the port, as you cannot port a disconnected or expired number.

Can I transfer my number if I’m still on a plan?

Yes, you can. Since most Australian plans are now “no lock-in”, you’re generally free to switch whenever you like. If you’re still paying off a phone, your new provider can still start the transfer straight away, but your old provider will send you a final bill for the remaining device balance (or device payout) and any outstanding cancellation costs. It’s always a good idea to check your provider’s app for a payout quote before you make the switch.
